Sleep, age, and depressed mood related to working mind says study
A recent study found a strong connection between working memory and sleep, age, and depression, raising concerns in the field of mental health. Working memory can be defined as that part of short-term memory that temporarily stores and manages information necessary for carrying out mental tasks such as reasoning, learning, and comprehension. Lead author Weiwei Zhang, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) said that previous researches had linked all the three factors differently to working memory, but this was the first time that someone looked at how the qualitative and quantitative aspects of working memory were affected by these three factors. The researchers studied the effects of the three health factors separately and found that all of them behaved in different ways and had independent effects.
Sleep, age, and depressed mood interlinked
The study was divided in two parts. The first part surveyed 110 college students to find the association between sleep quality and depressed mood and their relation with the working memory. The second part surveyed 31 adults between the age of 21 and 77 to study the effects of age on working memory. The study findings revealed that:
- Age affects the quality of memory i.e. how strong or weak the memory is.
- Sleep and depressed mood is associated with the remembering aspect of working memory.
According to Zhang, all the three factors were co related and led to the afflicted person complaining of a “foggy brain”. However, they interacted differently with the working memory and affected different aspects of the same. The researchers felt that the findings of this study may lead to the development of better treatment outcomes designed to deal with the negative outcomes of these factors on the working memory.
Adding further, Zhang said that with the help of the findings one can now study the mechanism of age-related dementia. One of the findings of the study also showed a direct link between bad sleep quality and depressed mood.
